Another successful Business Awards Gala

November 11, 2016

On Friday October 21, 2016 the Kapuskasing and District Chamber of Commerce welcomed over 200 guests at this year’s 26th Annual Business awards Gala (B.A.G.) which was held at the Civic Centre.

This annual events puts the finishing touches’ to all the activities and workshops that were held during Small Business Week and is a hit amongst our membership. The primary focus of the evening is to celebrate businesses, organizations and individuals who have made a mark in our community over the past year while giving everyone an opportunity to mingle and network.

This year’s theme was the roaring 1920’s - The Great Gatsby and guests, upon entering, were greeted by the 1635 Army Cadets and then given a hand held ball mask provided by JT & Co. and escorted to the third floor where they received a glass of chilled Champaign courtesy of Roussel Construction Limited. Photographers were then ready to snap a picture of our guests in front of the Step and Repeat which featured our Title sponsor of the evening, la Caisse Populaire of Kapuskasing. Taste buds were tantalized with various appetizers sponsored by our friends at Eastlink and washed down with signature cocktails prepared by the Rotary Club of Kapuskasing and sponsored by Rustic Bucket.

Guests made their way down to the auditorium which was decorated in silver, gold and black with large centerpieces that glowed with a flare of feathers curtesy of Country Roots & Garden Centre. The delicious 4 – course meal catered by Le Kaprice Resto was served at the tables and was enjoyed with some complementary wine courtesy of Investors Group. The supper was complete with a specialty coffee courtesy of Val Albert Motors.

The evening was led by our wonderful master of ceremonies Chantal Guillemette and Julien Boucher which began with an invigorating live auction to 3 wonderful prizes; the much anticipated VIP Lounge for the evening – sponsored in part by Kap Furniture Fashions and University of Hearst, followed by a wonderful week-end getaway to Sault Ste. Marie which included airfare curtesy of Bearskin Airlines, accommodations, ski passes and casino VIP access curtesy of our friends at Sault Ste. Marie Tourism, and finally a night cap in a specialty Jacuzzi suite at the Super 8 Hotel in Kapuskasing.

General Manager of La Caisse Populaire, Pierre Dorval, addressed the audience and thanked all business owners and highlighted their importance in our community. He continued on by applauding all the finalists of the evening and wished them all the best. « Il est important de reconnaître l’audace et la détermination de tous ces finalistes, car dans chacun de leur domaine, ils font tous de notre région un endroit où il fait bon vivre. La Caisse populaire de Kapuskasing est heureuse d’avoir participé à cette merveilleuse soirée » said Dorval.

The main event of the evening was the highly anticipated Business Awards. This process began with a call for nominations from the general public at the end of August. For a few weeks, people were able to send in their nominations for businesses, organizations or individuals that they deemed deserving of an award according to both the categories and criteria established by the Chamber’s Board of Directors. A total of 85 nominations were collected which represented 45 businesses in the community. This information was then given to a panel of 13 judges comprised of respectable business people, non-related to the Chamber Board of Directors, and of who represented both the private and public sector. They were tasked with 3 rounds of evaluations allowing them to narrow it down to 3 finalists per category. The judges remained anonymous throughout the entire process and sent their evaluations back to the chamber of commerce employees to then tally the numbers.

The presentations were done by the award sponsors and each began by highlighting the top 3 nominees per category through a picture slideshow, then the recipient was revealed. A total of 8 awards were given and listed below are the categories and recipients for each one:

  • Small Business – sponsored by Union Gas and won by: Uniglass plus Ziebart

The event was a great success and the organizing committee is very pleased with the outcome. According to the event organizers, they have received almost all positive comments and would like to thank everyone for attending our 2016 Business Awards Gala.

The night would not have been possible if not for the dedication of our numerous volunteers, sponsors and organizers. It was a great, wonderful team effort.  Thank you!

“Great job at the B.A.G. event. A real CLASS ACT!” says Yves Labelle, Town of Kap CEO.

See you all next year!
