Let us introduce: Northern Edge
Carving his future
Brock Babin hadn’t planned on becoming his own boss, but he is now carving his way into a great future. Although still attending high school, he spends his spare time running the business and looking for new ways to grow.
It all started two years ago when he took part in an entrepreneurship class at École secondaire publique Écho du Nord. The students were funded by the school board (CSPNE) and in conjunction with North Claybelt’s Head Start in Business, to try and launch their own business for the semester. Brock decided to get crafty with his woodworking skills and came up with the idea for a woodworking and laser engraving business, which he called Northern Edge. As the semester progressed, the response from the community was overwhelming, so he took it upon himself to make it a legitimate business.
Northern Edge offers a variety of items that Brock designs himself or people can custom order. You can choose from simple signs to larger business signs, cutting boards, shelves, portrait engravings, family trees, plaques, coasters, coat racks, and even furniture.
Once Brock decided to make Northern Edge a true business, he was introduced to the Start Me Up program, where students from around Ontario can apply for a chance at a grant of $3000 in order to get their business going. He was accepted in the summer of 2018 and that’s where things took off. He began participating in trade shows, marketing events and advertising his work over various social media.
Now in Grade 12, he runs the business part-time and continues researching trade shows and looking for other business opportunities. He continues to work out of his business teacher’s own business, Dubosq’s Guitar Shop, at 4 Byng Avenue.
Currently, you can view some of Brock’s work on the company page, www.facebook.com/NorthernEdgeKap. As well some products are available for sale at Rody’s Retail in Kapuskasing and at Trésoir Unique in Hearst.
